Academic Arts

The Visual Arts Department focuses on cultivating student creativity and problem solving skills. The students get a chance to experiment with a variety of materials and artmaking techniques to create beautiful works of art!

In 6th Grade our band program begins with basic sound production and a review of musical notation. No prior experience is needed to begin band in 6th grade. As students move through the program they learn how to perform both solo and ensemble music, and participate in concerts, festivals, and trips. Throughout their time in the BLMS band students increase their musical knowledge and performance abilities. 

Our choral program begins with basic sound production and a review of musical notation. No prior experience is needed to begin chorus. As students move through the program they increase their musical knowledge and performance abilities in performing both learn how to perform both solo and ensemble music. Students perform in multiple concerts throughout the year. 

The overall goal of our intervention program is to ensure that every students in our school is making academic and social progress regardless of their need.  Interventions clearly define goal for academic improvement in math.

Media Art is a class where students utilize Adobe programs to explore different creative careers and create digital artwork. Students discover and experiment creating projects and assignments inspired by the current creative industries. Students learn digital literacy and the elements of art to create digital images. 

Our 6th Grade orchestra begins with basic sound production and a review of musical notation. No prior experience is needed to begin orchestra in 6th Grade. As students move through the program they increase their musical knowledge and performance abilities in performing both learn how to perform both solo and ensemble music. Students perform in multiple concerts throughout the year. 

Physical Education and Health is a one-semester course. Students will focus on learning lifelong health enhancing skills with the emphasis of being able to create and perform an exercise regimen that the student has designed for him or herself, and to comprehend how to incorporate lifelong healthy choices to promote a total healthy lifestyle.

Each PLTW Gateway unit engages students in activities that not only build knowledge and skills in areas including Computer Science, Engineering, and Biomedical Science, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance.

We focus on Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills and help our students build academic knowledge while they improve their Spanish proficiency. 

​In 6th and 7th grade the basics are taught- numbers, colors, weather expressions and basic cultural knowledge. In Spanish 1, a class that 8th grade student are able enroll in and to receive high school credit for, the first semester is heavy on grammar and learning language structure,  while the last semester of the year focuses on language fluency and reading.
